The trick to following through on your New Year's resolutions is to set smart and reachable goals. Here's a guide to help you set your goals.

Make Them SMART

If you aim to succeed academically this new year, you need to make some changes. Vowing to get better grades or stop procrastinating isn’t enough. You need to start making SMART resolutions. You have to carefully consider what you want to accomplish and how you plan on getting there. Here is a guide to what a SMART goal or resolution should be.

SMART Goals Are

Specific: You need to be able to tell when, or if, your goal is met. It’s easier to stick to your resolutions if they’re specific. There’s less wiggle room; you either reach your goal or you don’t. Instead of saying, “I’m going to study more,” say, “Every Friday I will review everything I saw in class during the week.” Measurable: Goals should be tangible and quantifiable. You need to be able to know for sure if you’re meeting them or not. Say you want to lose weight this year. Set a specific amount of pounds you plan to drop and an estimate of how long it will take for you to lose them. Attainable: Your goals need to be attainable. They should have the right amount of difficulty to keep you focused. If they're too hard, you’ll feel discouraged and quit; if they're too easy, you won’t be challenged and get bored. If you are planning to boost your grades, don’t expect to get only A’s. Work towards slowly improving them. Realistic: You need to make resolutions that you will actually be able to keep. There shouldn’t be any barriers like time or money that can stop you from reaching your goals. You can’t expect to be a math genius if you don’t have the time to practice. Timely: While setting a specific time limit to achieve your goals can make you feel stressed and anxious, you do need to set a time limit. You also need to give yourself enough time to realistically achieve your goal. You won’t become an expert or an honor roll student overnight.
