Is Your Child on Track to Reach Their Educational Goals?

Now is the perfect time in the school year for parents to touch base with their children and check how they are going in relation to achieving any goals which were set at the start of the school year. Below is a basic guide from The Tutoring Center, Rosenberg TX on how to make this conversation a productive one.

Status Update

If your children are anything like the majority of children in school, then there is a good chance that they have goals which they haven’t even told you about. The first step is to find out all of your child’s goals and how they are tracking in regards to achievement. If you find that your child is falling behind, the best response is support and encouragement.
  1. If, for example, one of your child’s goals is to read a set number of books before the school year ends, help them make adjustments to their routines and study/social schedule which can allow for more reading time.
  2. If there simply won’t be enough time to achieve their goals, don’t be afraid to alter them. Continuing with the book reading example above, look at either reducing the number of books to read or find smaller books which are easier to read.
While the first tip will obviously be the most appealing, it’s important that your child does not simply think that if they can’t achieve their goals then they should give up. Instead, teach them that they can always alter their goals and to stick with their efforts.

A Child Who Is Performing Well

If your student tells you that they are tracking well and you can’t see any hurdles which will prevent them from reaching their goals, don’t be afraid to include new goals. Complementary goals can be a great way to help them achieve even more but not overwhelm them. As an example, when your child finishes reading their set of books, look for smaller books by the same author which are connected to the series they just read. These smaller goals can make use of any additional study time your student has.
